Parents assume coding needs strong math or some special “tech kid” gene. It doesn’t. If your kid can follow a recipe or build with LEGO, they’re ready. Here’s the rough map:
Perfect for picture-based coding (drag blocks with symbols, no reading needed — ScratchJr is great). At this age it’s about cause and effect: “I press this, that happens.” Pure play.
The sweet spot for block coding (Scratch). They can build real games, hold a plan in their head, and fix things when they break. This is where “I made something” really clicks.
Curiosity, and a willingness to try again when something doesn’t work. That’s it. Coding builds the logic and patience — you don’t need them first.
The only real test: sit them down with a free tool for twenty minutes and watch. If they light up when the character moves, they’re ready. Most kids do.
