Fewer tears (theirs and yours) with a few small changes that actually hold.
Homework becomes a battle when it’s a negotiation. It gets easier when it’s just… the routine. A few things that help:
Decide once — “homework is at the kitchen table right after snack” — and stop re-deciding daily. The fight is usually about whether and when; a routine removes both.
Momentum beats willpower. Let them knock out the quickest task first — the win makes the harder one feel possible.
“What’s the part you’re stuck on?” beats doing it for them. If you supply every answer, they learn that struggle means wait-for-mom. Sit near, stay warm, let them do the lifting.
“When homework’s done, the evening is yours” is a better motivator than any threat. Make the finish line real and worth reaching.
A tired 7-year-old melting down at 8pm isn’t going to learn much. Sometimes the wise call is “we’ll finish in the morning” — and that’s not losing, that’s parenting.
